How to Balance Work and Home Life: A Life with a Goal of Tranquility

Let's face it: It is hard to balance work and life. Each of us has our own personal needs and wants that require us to tailor how we achieve our work-life balance. Working or bringing income into the home is essential along with productivity but in combination with that, it is important to be aware of our mental health. Burnout can happen to all of us at some point and we need to be aware of where we are with it so we can maintain a healthy balanced life. With burnout and or pushing that limit you risk exhausting yourself mentally and physically. That exhaustion can bring decreased productivity and overall discontent in your life. Our relationships can also be affected, from relationships with our spouses to relationships with our family and friends to relationships with our kids. Personal connections improve our overall emotional well-being, giving us stronger support systems along with healthier ways of handling work-life balance.

Importance of Work-Life Balance:
Our well-being shows through every aspect of our lives, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. With balance, you're more likely to feel content, happy, and productive in all realms of your life. Burnout is exhaustion caused by long-term stress, fatigue, and being emotionally drained or overwhelmed. Burnout can affect your lifestyle along with work, impacting productivity, efficiency, and happiness or fulfillment in what you're doing. Stress is a state of worry or mental tension caused by difficult situations. It can lead to anxiety, interrupted sleep, and overall issues with your health. When you manage your work and home life, it impacts your health, productivity, and relationships positively.

Boundaries are Necessary:
We all have limits and standards and to respect those we need boundaries. Work hours need to be defined and clear to prevent overlapping with your personal time. Once you set those boundaries, stick to them so that it's easier to manage. Often times we get into situations where we allow work to bleed in once or twice and then some bosses, managers, or even clients start taking advantage of that opportunity more often. Be aware of that because your personal time is important. Your workspace needs to be a dedicated area so you can mentally separate work from home or personal. This helps allow you to mentally shut off and fully relax when you're not working rather than letting the work spill into your time when you want to relax. Setting boundaries in creating a work-life separation gives you the mental capacity to be more productive in both areas which promotes work-life balance.

Manage Your Time:
It is easier for us to manage time or, well anything for that matter when we prioritize. Prioritization is a helpful tool in general in all aspects of our lives from work to personal to spiritual, it inhibits our morals, values, and goals. You can use tools like to-do lists and planners to manage tasks. It can be physical pen and paper styles or digital, whichever works best for you. I use both mediums depending on the situation or both to create a safety net or backup depending on its importance. There are several options at your disposal to help with time management and task prioritization! Giving ourselves breaks helps us to recharge and avoid fatigue or feeling overwhelmed. We are human, we need time to decompress and it is important and efficient when we allow for that time to do so. Taking breaks can also help with refreshing ideas for better outcomes in so many situations.

Wellness and Self-Care:
Taking care of ourselves is important for us personally and the people around us. For our physical health, we can integrate exercise routines into our daily schedules. Allowing time for daily exercise is a good use of managing time and prioritizing goals of wellness and self-care. Be consistent in giving your time to move your body, if you're working from home that may look like standing up and walking around the house and stretching once every hour or even setting time aside before you start your work day or even after it is completed. Our mental health helps us obtain all we do and practicing mindfulness or meditation can allow us to stay grounded. Staying grounded can help us with better sleep, stress relief, reduced anxiety and depression, stronger immune systems, and more energy.

Effective Communication:
First starting with family you can discuss your work schedule to set boundaries and expectations. Communicating with them will build a healthy relationship, build trust, help in avoiding and/or resolving conflicts, and establish boundaries to balance that part of your life. Second with your colleagues, clearly and effectively communicating boundaries and expectations develops strong healthy relationships and prevents or aids in resolving conflicts as well. Communicating with your colleagues lets them know your limits, and availability promotes respect for yourself and others.

Using Technology Wisely:
Technology is all around us and it gives us incredible tools at our disposal. There are productivity apps that aid in task management and time tracking. Some of the task management tools are Todoist, Trello, Asana, ClickUp, Monday.com, and more. Time-tracking apps include Toggl Track, Clockify, TimeCamp, RescueTime, Harvest, and more. There are even some combination tools that are task managing and time tracking which are Wrike, TickTick, Huly, and more. Although technology is useful, don't forget to do a digital detox. Unplugging from technology to spend quality time with your family, in nature, or even time for yourself is important in making sure you achieve that balance you're looking for.

These tools and suggestions can help you in achieving a work-life balance. Don't strive for perfection, strive for consistency and effort. Balance is achievable and we can customize it to fit us all uniquely. Finding peace in a work-life balance helps in our overall happiness.
